clear coat

I have owned my red 00 dak since new. Love it now as I did when new. Has 80k and looks great, except for some pitting and flakeing of the clear coat on the roof. Just started this summer.  I assume it is breaking down from sun exposure. Has anyone else had this problem ? Was wondering if this will accellerate and if the fix should be soon. The base coat underneath appears great, and isnt faded. Thanks in advance!

.wet sand tht bitch down and hit the panel with some rattle can clear... it wont hurt..

.That Was Going To Be The Plan. I Have A Can Of Custom Mixed I Got When I Repaired The Crimp A The Bottom Of The Cab. Just Was Wondering What Other Thoughts Were. Thanks Alot!!!!!!:d

.It probably wouldn't cost but 200-300 bucks to have a professional shop spray it for you. Clear coat is tricky if you don't have the right equipment to keep the airline clean. A rattle can would also work but won't always look the best. All depends on what you're willing to spend.

.That flaking and pitting is just the start my friend. Soon you'll see it on the top edge of the door, then the hood, the fenders, the top of the bed rails. Never ending process. If thats all you had that flaked and pitted be happy.

My truck has been in several accidents so 80% of it has been completely redone from bare metal, the panels that have not been touched are starting to get really bad with flaking. Planning on hitting up those parts starting this weekend.

.If I had a dollar for every Dodge Truck whose clear coat rotted away...

I'm surprised there hasn't been a major class-action lawsuit against Chrysler over the paint on these trucks - it truly is the shittiest quality I think I've seen in bulk on any modern vehicle.

.not had that problem at all with my 98 with 132,4xx just rust.. when we bought it in PA with 69,xxx miles no rust at all... got it here 63,xxx miles later, because of New Yorks obsession with Salt in winter, bed above the wheels on the left side, front fender near the wheel right side, rear bumper left side has a huge hole in it cause of the rust and right part of it is starting and dont know about the front bumper cause of the bumper cover but more and likely it is, and thats as much rust as i know of so far and thats as much as i'll probly know til i get the whole thing repainted... which wont be til... hell probly 2-5 years

.absolutely zero rust on mine.  Been inside and under it through and through.  I'm lucky that it's just my paint... and whats even luckier is that I can paint.

.Yeah, I have a HUGE rust bubble on the roof of my truck. The hole itself is about a dime in size. Its on the driver side top corner of the windshield. Plans to get working on it start this weekend.

.im trying to combat the rust myself.. gonna go with magnetpaint chassis saver for the unseen areas

.good ol' chrysler de-lam, not that hard to fix but it def. needs new paint wich is a bummer

.No rust on mine, but that's exactly what mine is doing too.  A 2000 QC.. Red.  2 tone red now... due to missing clear coat.  I asked for pricing on another thread..

.well I see that this is a problem. ConkerandDakota, I also have a rust hole on the left side rear bumper. Filled it and painted it untill next spring when I hope to replace it. (anyone know where I can get a replacement?) Cheeup, what did you find out? Thank you all for input! This is such a great truck to drive and somehow will try to keep it looking good.

.firemed, check out your local salvage yard's. With the C4C program there should be several dakota's in the yard with decent bumper's on them. Buy one that's clean then you can repaint it to color match or whatever.
