AEM cam gear...sh*t or not?
Curious...I've heard about the AEM slipping but I've also noticed lot of people are using them. What's the real deal? are they worth the risk?
.not shit...i know alot of ppl w/ them and they've never had any probs.
.a lot of people have problems with aem cam gears slipping.. why you say? cause they have only 3 bolts...you can get the skunk2 camgears which is about the same price and is much better. but it all depends on what cams you have. what kind of cams do you have?
.Right now I just have stock cams....I was just curious for the future. Why does it matter what cams I have?? Does AEM fallter at higher revs or something?
.not sure but i think having cam gears with stock cams is useless...not sure about that though...think i read that somewhere
.you can still get some gains with cam gears with stock cams..maybe about 2-4whp depending on tuning. the reason why you need the correct cams for cam gears is because some cam gears will not bolt on correctly on some camshaft. i think aem cam gears are crap. do a search on google about aem cam gears slipping. i dont see much people using them anymore, i mostly seen skunk2, str, toda, spoon, jun or other brands

Really...that's wierd why would they design it like that? Anyways can you give me an example of a non compatible mix?
.Useless on a SOHC engine.
.i dont think its useless on a sohc engine..for about $100 for a cam gear you can get some gains..what parts can you find for $100 that will get you 2-4whp..most people dont see any views beyond i/h/e. a cam gear will help out a lot on low end and improves top end. it all depends on how its tuned and adjusted.
example of a camshaft is the toda camshaft, most of the after market cam gears uses connecting bolts that will not bolt on correctly to the camshaft..

..
How in the hell do you get any additional hp from a single cam gear? You can move it in smaller increments than you would without an adjustable cam gear BUT: you cannot induce any additional overlap on any single cam engine whether it's OHV or OHC without changing the cam. You might have a 1/4 degree adjustability advantage over just taking the timing belt off and advancing or retarding the valve timing. and that does not add up to 2-4whp.
.well i have da aem cam gear on my sohc vtec and it gain me 4 more whp and it pick up alot quicker wen i punch it and i have stock camshaft till next week wen i get my skunk 2 camsshaft

You can advance or retard your valve timing...sure...but you can do that with a stock gear by taking off the timing belt and advancing or retarding the cam.
I call on your quot;4 whpquot;
.i believe what i see, i seen 3 cars before with a addition of a cam gear, i seen a gain of 2 and 3 whp on a dyno. i even got 4whp of my old setup with str cam gears, with little tuning on the gears and vtec controller.
.Maybe...and just maybe, it's from the vtec controller. Not from the cam (singular) gear. With a single cam the overlap is set. You can't induce more. It's a physical impossibilty.
.cam gears cause i have a dohc and my vtec controller was already tune, it had to be adjusted again for the cam gears. it all depends on other mods on the car that will determine on the gains. |
