how Much trans fluid in a 4.7 2004

Hey guys i was just going to change the fluid on my trans and would like to know the correct amount of L i should be putting back into it. I searched and was unable to find this information. Is there a filter on this specific trans

My ruck is a 2wd 2004 Dakota with the 4.7 and auto transThanks in advance!

.There are actually 2 filters for the 545RFE trans in your truck, one is a spin on filter that looks just like an oil filter the other is a normal looking trans filter. It will prob take between 5 and 6qts to refill the trans (Alldata spec is 5.2L), but I would get 7 just in case it takes a little more. When you get the pan back on the trans, start with adding 4qts then start the truck up and put it in all gears for a sec or two each going back and forth from Park - low/1st a couple of times to get all air bubbles out of the fluid passages so you can check the level accurately. Check the level, and add as neccessary, run it through all the gears before checking it each time to make sure you are getting an accurate level.

.Alright great! thanks for the help

Im ready to get it all back together but i cant get the seal out for the pickup filter so i can install the new one. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for this.

.TTTIm on my 6th coat of gasket remover on that trans pan!

.That seal is a big pain in the ass to get out but I would recommend you change it.  Also make sure when you are putting the new one on you tap it on until it is flush to the tranny and then put the filter onto the seal.Oh and I used some long needle nose and a screw driver to gently get it out.

.Im at just over 80 thousand km and its baked on pretty good. I lost some paint on the gasket surface of the pan, now i shouldnt have to worry about there being paint and then no paint on this surface in some areas should IBack to the garage for now ill let everyone know how it goes

thanks!

.I got that old trans pickup filter seal out and the new one in there flush. mounted the new pickup filter as well as the screw on filter and now im just finishing up making the gasket surfaces perfectly clean before i put the pan back on the trans.

costs in Canadian dollars came just to under 100 for the pickup, screw on filter, gasket and fluid
I feel much better installing these parts myself
rather than a mechanical at a shop or dealership.

.The fluid alone is most of the cost of the whole thing.  I had to use 9 quarts for mine but I left it open all night and a crap load more of fluid dripped out.

.got it all back together earlier today and its good to go. The only thing that kinda scares me is that little hex screw that holds up the pickup. I did not use loctite on it because there was no loctite used previous but im honestly contemplating pulling the pan off and putting new fluid AGAIN just to use loctite on that hex bolt. Maybe im just paranoid but i know its torqued down REAL good, anyone else use loctite on that hex bolt.

.I didn't.  But thanks now I'll be paranoid too, lol.

.DAMN!  im scared big time cause if that backs out the trans isnt getting fluid!!! im not going to get any sleep

.Lol, I think you will be fine.  The weight of the filter wanting to drop off will keep the screw tight.  Also even if the screw wasn't there the filter would stay wedged in the seal.

.Ok that makes me feel better
My truck seams to shift smoother with the new fluid but for the first time in the garage when i went from reverse to park there was a loud click noise but then it didn't do it. Anyone have any similar things happens after the fluid and filter change

.I know mine really slammed into gear the first few times going running through back and forth.  It's all good now though.
