2001 4.7 died need advice

I just bought a 2001 dakota cc 4x4 with a bad 4.7. The truck has 165k on her and looks to be in great shape. She is fully loaded! I want to repower it but I'm not at all familiar with the 4.7. I have read into and I'm just starting to figure things out. Can someone help me with a few things.
1. My truck should be the 16 tooth tone ring. Can I use a newer engine with the 32 tooth ring?
2. If I buy a 32 tooth motor can I just change the tone ring or is there more?
3. Can I swap computers instead of the tone ring?
4. Are all 4.7's EGR equipped? And is this a major hurdle in going with a different year motor?
5. My truck is a 5-speed, is that going to affect a motor swap to a newer engine?

Thx! guys!!

Thx! guys!!It would be alot of work to swap out the tone ring... To swap the rings you would need to remove the crank... So YES you could do it but it would take alot of work and you may want to just rebuild the one you have since your going to need to tare the other one done to nothing just to swap the tone ring.

If you need ANYTHING let me know, we can get you great prices on all your factory parts and High Performance parts.

.Do you think it is worth while to try and rering and rebearing a motor with 165k? How much are the the parts for something like that? Roughly of course. Full gasket set, rings, rod and main bearings, probably a timing kit considering the mileage, Oil pump??? I'll do all the work myself unless machining is required. I'll have to farm that out. How do these heads hold up? Should I consider having them reconditioned?

Thx!!

It all depends on what you will be asking of the engine once your done...  If your looking for stock performance stock rebuild then I think you could get away with quite a bit... but if your looking at bumping the performance up then you would want to take a more performance orientated direction.

Bearings would not be very expensive at all... I think we can get you into a complete set for just over 100.00 that's both Rod and Mains.

There are not to many gaskets used on the 4.7L... it uses rubber seals that are reusable.  As long as they are not dried out, torn or damaged the ones you have should be good to go.

If I where you I would have the block checked to see if you could just re-ring it... but since your in there you may want to opt for new pistons with a slightly higher 10:1 compression ratio and larger bore... this would add both power and efficiency to your engine.

So you would first need to decide on what you want from  your engine... and then go that route... we can help you either direction you chose.

.Basically I'm looking for cheep and easy! The engine in my truck has both a rod knock and a bad head gasket (cylinder compression in the cooling system). If you think that I might be able to get away with a rering and rebearing, I'll pull it and break it down. I'm afraid the mileage might be to high for that. I have found a 50k mile 2002 HO motor for $1300 shipped. Is that a decent price? Is it an easy upgrade? I'm assuming all I need would be a computer flash? I'm not looking for performance upgrades on this repower but if I can drop an HO motor in for the same price or $200 more, I'll do it.

Thx!

.If the 2002 H/O engine has a 16 tooth tone ring then it should be a direct drop in... other then the Knock sensor... but your engine would not use it... so no big deal...

But then you need to ask yourself what kind of abuse has this used H/O engine seen?

is the tone ring balanced with the crank?  I have read mixed answers. Do you sell just the tone ring on your site, i thought i saw it on there before. I am also looking to swap the 32 tooth motor to a 16 tooth. On a side note, the tone ring on the pass side cam is different also. so if you swap the tone ring for the crank you also need to do it for the cam.

.We have the ability to make both... I have not had any made yet though...

.This is all real good info! What about the EGR? What is the year break down for motors with EGR verses without?

Thx!

I know my 2002 does not have EGR... I think EGR was introduced in 2003 but I could be mistaken.

.Well, I have bought a used 2001 engine with 37k on it. It was pulled about       3-4 years ago and shelved. Is there anything that I should replace before I drop it in? Naturally I will be doing oil and filter, serp belt, air filter, and new lube in the manual trans. I don't feel like the plugs need changing with only 37k on them. Anything else? I don't want to open it up, so that eliminates bearings.

On a side note: Some people are running over sized oil filters in place of the stock one. What is the part number for those larger filters?

.Anyone have that filter info? Is it the FL1A?

Did dodge serial number the engine in these trucks? Will I be able to match a number on an engine to a vin of a truck?
