Hopefully last 5.2 engine build problem thread

Hopefully this will be my last of my many threads on the cam/head swap on my '98 5.2 Dakota. For those that haven't been following along, the truck got a KRC210x cam, ported Edelbrock heads, Scorpion 1.6 RRs, M-1 Intake Manifold, Fastman ported TB, and SCT Tuner.

Here's the problem as bet as I can explain currently:

Hissing noise come out of IAC at idle / disappears under throttle
Engine stalls if throttle is quickly let off
Truck is not throwing codes
Truck running rich
Smoke in intake manifold when engine off and throttle body opened

Here's what I've done to try and remedy it:

Replaced IAC
Reinstalled tune
Plugged all vacuum ports
Replaced intake manifold gaskets (twice due to coolant in oil)

Anyone have any ideas? As far as I can tell the intake manifold is properly sealed, but I haven't drained the oil yet to check for coolant again. There is no coolant or oil leaking anywhere that I can tell.

.I just went back out there and unplugged the IAC. It threw the code 0505 for it. I cleared it and plugged it back in. Upon restarting, the truck didn't hiss as much at idle, but it now hisses under throttle.

Does anyone remember how the length of the IAC when they reinstalled it? The instructions say less than 1 1/8quot; so I put it at an 1quot;. Could this be an issue?

.Anyone?

I took the truck around the block to the gas station and back last night. It seemed rather sluggish and eager to shift into a lower gear. Granted, I didn't go past 3000 RPM since its still being broken in.

What does the stock cam pull for vacuum at idle? The new cam supposedly pulls 10-12quot;. Could the truck be trying to compensate for that by opening the IAC more than normal that would give me the hissing noise?

My university's auto club is having a dyno day Saturday. So, I'm trying to get all this fixed by tonight so I can get some miles on the engine before Saturday.

.Well when I changed the oil there was coolant in it again AND there was less than 4 quarts that came out. I'm assuming its a bad head gasket at this point. So looks like I'm going to be tearing the motor apart again just don't know when I'll find the time.

.How many miles on the new motor?

.hissing at iac is normal
truck is running rich causes smoke in intake manifold (excess fuel) my guess to this is your tune sucks (sorry)
dies when you let off- i'dle too low or again its your tune

.new motor has less than lt; 5 miles on it. After thinking I fixed the problem I drove to the gas station and back, but I found coolant in the oil. So, its been parked since.

The tune is from KRC and its the standard tune for the cam. I guess I can double check with them, but I don't think that's the issue.

.have you done a compression/leak down test? I'm pretty damn sure you have a busted head gasket or a bad block. Is that a rebuilt engine(didn't read that)? If it is and they didn't magnaflux it or sonic check the block then that could be a part of your problem. At least the coolant issue. As far as the tune goes, did you degree the cam or did you go straight up with it?

.I haven't done a compression test. I might try to do one this week before I tear the motor down.

The engine is not rebuilt. It's the same engine as in the truck before, but I'm starting to wonder if the mating surface on the block might be warped. If it's not the head gaskets it's got to be something with the block.

The cam is installed at 106* according to the cam card specs.

I'm really hoping it's not a bad engine block, but if it is it's just reason enough to build up the 360 block that's been sitting in my garage.

.If you go 360 might as well go 408

if you have a 318 why is your nickname 360?

My nickname is 360 because I signed up here right after I bought the 360 block and was planning on swapping it in the truck, but it never happened. I thought I'd hold off and do a 408 with it instead, but I couldn't afford it. Finally, I decided to just do a head and cam swap on my 318 to run around with while I slowly build the 408 block then just swap the top end over to the 408.

I'd love to step up to a 408 right now, but I couldn't really afford it until I start my internship this Summer, and I want the truck running so I can drive it. I'm not sure I have enough money to rebuild the 360 at the moment which is why I'm just trying to get my 318 up and running.

.Hissing from the IAC is normal? My truck has a slight hiss like when I lay off throttle, or ease onto it after coasting, is this the same thing? (I also have a 14quot; Kamp;N which is what I thought was causing the hiss until I read this...)

.Well, I got the top-end of the motor back off, cleaned, and ready to go back on. I put a straight edge on the deck and could not fit a .002quot; feeler gauge underneath it at any point. The head gaskets did not seem broke, cracked, blown, or anything else. So, that's two possible issues put to rest.

My new question is are the head gaskets supposed to have the same side facing upwards? When I put them in place over the two pins on each end of the deck each head gasket has a different side facing upwards. I wouldn't ask but each side of the head gasket is different.

.man i just did mine and i cant remember. which gaskets did you go with? i hope someone chimes in here soon for ya
