EK9 CTR passenger side tray question...

Hi everyone,

This is a relatively simple question - what years of the JDM Civic Type R came with the passenger side dash tray, and what years came with a passenger side airbag?  What the airbag an option throughout 96-00?  The reason I ask is because the documentation that seen (for a '99 CTR) says that the car has dual airbags, yet places like ICB Motorsports and Password:JDM swear up and down that you need the tray to make an authentic JDM CTR conversion...

What's the truth?

Another question - the USDM '96-'00 Civic CX hatchbacks didn't come with passenger side airbags, so did they have this tray installed or is it pucly JDM?

.Pulling your airbag is pretty dumb anyway.  Its a safety device, for like...safety and stuff.  I mean,  if USDM brakes stopped faster would you replace them with JDM brakes?  I know that has a performance aspect to it, but its also a safety issue.  Youre downgrading your car just for the sake of looks.  If thats not the purest definition of rice I dont know what is.

And Im sorry that was so offtrack.

AMEN! airbags saved my life, when i flipped and hit a tree in a ditch in my moms car, your a fuckin DA if you remove your airbags, y don't you go ahead n get a RACING STEERING wheel like 2F2F!! and be cool

.Give him a break, answer his question or lay off.  It's his car and his life, I'm sure he thought about this already.

If I was him, I would definately get a passenger side dash and a SRS CTR steering wheel, and then take one of you guys for a ride and purposely hit a tree head on... hahaha.

BTW, I believe since 93+ all the USDM Honda Civics come with passeneger side airbags standard.  Not unless, I've been misinformed.

.Guys, I never said I wanted to remove the passenger side airbag on my car.  I mearly asked if the JDM Civic Type R ACTUALLY came with a tray as opposed to the airbag.  Like I said in my original post, all the documentation that I've seen says that they came with an airbag (at least for '99), but the on-line JDM parts places assure me that if I want to do a quot;properquot; JDM conversion to the car, that I have to pull the passenger side airbag and put one of these trays.  That's all.

I know that airbags save lives - I had a good friend at work survive a horrible accident just two months ago, and the only reason he's still with us is because of the airbags in his car.  And when I do get a JDM Civic Type R steering wheel, you can bet it will be the SRS version.  Besides, my understanding is that insurance companies can actually deny a claim if you remove the airbags of a vehicle that came with them originally installed by the OEM.  I don't know how true that is, but I wouldn't want to risk it one way or the other.

So rest assured guys, I am NOT pulling the airbags out of my car...I just want to find out if the JDM CTR had both driver and passenger airbags.

.the TYPE R, being the highest trim civic, has dual airbags. that tray is NOT for the CTR, but for the lower trim civics that DON'T come with a pass airbag.

several civics here in chile have that tray, i'll try to snap some pics for you.

i don't see why they call so many things JDM, when in actuality they're just quot;non-usdmquot;... usdm is the oddest honda domestic market.

.That answers my question - thanks anfrey!

to me jdm does not mean an exclusively jdm part.. it simply means a part that is offered on a vehicle in that market... as you stated there are onther places that have distributed hondas with things that differ from the usdm market.. we call something quot;jdmquot; as a shortcut... when sourcing a passenger airbag tray that is in fact a jdm part (not exclusively) its easier to say jdm airbag tray..

as to why one would do that its pretty simple ... when modifying a car cosmetically people generally do it for two reasons.. 1. is from a classic car standpoint.. maybe to restore a 50's Chevy in the most OEM original way, and 2. is to stand out ... when people in the usdm market buy things that are common place in the rest of the world it (IMHO) fulfills both of those reasons.... i do not think anyone is buying this tray with the hopes to be discovered and put in a magazine, i for example will buy this soon since i have totally disabled the air bag system (due to my momo steering wheel) so its really just preference

And Im sorry that was so offtrack.sorry im a little off track.. but EVERY person ive EVER seen and spoken to in regards to projectors say that the light output is shit.... so why remove a perfectly good operating lighting system and replace it with some cheap ass aftermarket projectors... seems kind of silly to me....

sorry im so off track

Well perhaps quot;everyone youve ever talked toquot; is wrong as hell.  If you dont buy the bullshit APC bulbs the projector lights are brighter than stock.  The ones it came with are garbage, but the ones I bought new were better.   Its not like its hard to get better than stock lights anyway, they sucked pretty bad.

i see what you mean. i would just call them quot;non-usdmquot; rather than jdm

point taken.. lol

.I seen the tray on ebay for 94-01 integras but i never seen it for civics yet!! its like 50 bux for a pieace of plastic!! it would look nice tho. If anyone has one for a civic post pictures  thanks

.The air bag tray I have heard isn't even offered in Japan. It's pretty much a Canadian thing, as I have heard it wasn't even offered in the US. Now there are some other countries that did recieve the air bag tray as well, but Japan to my knowledge wasn't even one of them. And as someone said, it's from the base model Civics like the CX model.
