Powder coating bad for rims?
OK I sent the rims I have purchaced from DakFreak, to the blsters.
He asked me If I was going to get them powder coated or painted. I said I would love to get them powdercoated but decided on paint cause it is cheaper for me. Powder coaters wanted $80 each rim, and my painter said he would base clear them for $20 each rim.
The blaster guy said that it was good that I was getting them painted instead of powdercoated. He said that powdercoat is just a layer of plastic, and it has no anti corrotion properties to it. I asked how do you know this and he said that he used to do it and close people of his still does it. Says he got 30+ years experience with this.
He explained to me with all coatings and paints no matter what you have little micro holes in the coating. so when you put multiple coatings on there is less chance of metal being exposed to the air. Since powdercoat is one layer and has no ability to prevent corrosion it is best to get them painted instead.
what do you guys think??
.hes full of shit. My jeep came with powdercoated wheels from the factory in the early 90s. I drove it on the beach all the time and lived at the beach. Never had a hint of corrosion on them.
The main difference between powder and paint is how they stick to the edges. Its tough to make powder stick on a bead or sharp edge.
.Do you have to deal with winter and salt in your area?
.
thats a funny story
especially considering that powder coat goes on as a powder but is then heated which kinda causes it to quot;meltquot; into a smooth layer
when i had my wheels powedr coated they did a layer of quot;primerquot; powder coat and them the blue
.I want some of what he's smoking. The PC is harder to chip/scratch and expose metal. Anywhere logevity and durability of a finish is concerned, they don't use paint, lol.
I've painted and powdercoated the same steel brackets, and they've been in the same environment, guess which one is rusting?
.The only problem you will have with Powder coated rims is if you scratch the powdercoat deep enough it will start rusting ( steel) oxidizing ( alluminum)
but thats with anything. Once its scratched deep enough youcant stop it from peeling

Not if the metal is prepped right. Zinc phosphating before powdercoating will prevent rusting/corroding if it ever gets scratched down to metal.
.Its funny you should mension that because I have a machine that sprays zinc.
If I build it up enough to sand the zinc I can polish it and have it shine like chrome.
I use the machine for body work, or to coat metal to prevent it from rusting.
.I have some powder-coated wheels and it holds up very well! From what I understand powder-coating is probably the best thing to do. Painting will chip much easier with the weather. |
