tapping under valve cover
ok....when im driving say in at about 3500 rpm and the gas pedal is maybe half way down, the engine makes a tapping noise. i opened the hood with the car running and i reved it from the throttle body to about 3500 or so and the tapping is under the valve cover. i took off the valve cover but i cant see anything outta place or screwed up. the rear lifter arms are supposed to be a little wiggly right if so everything under the cover is a go but i dunno why its making a noise......i wanna get this taken care of b4 i drive anymore so i dont fuck up my motor.......HELP PLEASE ASAP
.come on guys i need to know if this is serious
.iz it knocking sound? or tapping.....and r u sure its coming from the valve cover? cuz sometimes sounds gets messup under the hood when the engine iz running, so you might hear one thing when it could be something else
.i'd say possible have your valves adjusted. how does your oil look?
.oil was a little low, but not bad...and yes becuase i was 6 inches from the valve cover listening and im sure it was from under there.....also the oil was a little burnt which i just changed the oil not long ago
.HEY first thing, adjustment of the valves is manditory, especially if you drive hard. They are loud when out of spec, and that doesn't take much.............so adjust them, or get them adjusted and there will be a noticeable difference in noise and in performance. I love VTEC so I adjust my shit everytime I change my oil. Might as well check all the rest of your tune up parts too.(spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and clean the throttle body, etc.etc.) I hear Honda's all the time with there valves tappin way too loud and to know that all it would take is about 30 minutes, and there cars could be runnin' so much better..................PEACE
.sweet, so its not too serious?........buddy of mine said its valve lash, how do u adjust the valves
.are you 100% sure the noise is coming from your valve cover? similar tapping noises could be made from a bad throwout bearing, or it could simply be the ever dreaded hood rattle
.yes im 110% positve...i said i was under the hood, 6 inches from the valve cover and i know thats it
.Well, it seems to me that its your valves. Get them adjusted and put some Royal Purple oil in. I use to put that oil in my civic when I had it, it works real well. I now use it in my Teggy.
.rent a filler guage and check your valve adjustment. Call honda and ask for the desired valve clearence.
.just take it to a shop for $40.00 and do it right.
.The most common tapping noise coming from the valve train area is lifter noise. You can try 4 different things. 1 - Use a thicker oil. 2 - Get an Engine crankcase flush (with an actual flush machine like BG or SNAP-ON MOTORVAC). 3 - Replace the lifters. 4 - Put up with it. But like everyone else said first, try getting a valve adjustment. And if you try doing it yourself, make sure the engine is STONE COLD (your talking about thousandths of an inch)
.i just adjusted my vavles, easy as hell and takes 20 mins or so (16valves)
