How to: Lighten Flywheel?

I have an extra flywheel, that came out of my friends SI... I am taking it to a machine shop to have it lightened. Any suggestions on how light I should go?, or where to take the pounds off? or have it shaved... and drilled? I just need some expert advise.

P.S I am confident the machinast knows what he is doing. But he is probally gonna ask me a bunch of questions, and I want to be prepared with answers...

Also: before you start telling me to just go out and buy a new flywheel that has already been lightened... I work next door to the machine shop, and the guy's gonna do it for like $20.

.just make sure he doesnt take it off of the back of the flywheel. and honda flys are two stepped. but im sure your dude knows this.

.Yeah great idea to have it machined by some dude in a shop........

I wouldnt go any lighter than 12 thats for sure... unless you are heavily modded.

.yeah i would agree 12-14 is good for a motor that is mildly modded.

any ideas where to take the weight off?? I'd heard from a friend (whose not always right) that the back is where you want to take the pounds... that they add steel to the backend of the flywheel to make it heavier, so its stored inertia, for climbing hills and all.. you dont have to downshift.

P.S quot;the backquot; being the side NOT touching the pressure plate.

.I know you want to save money... but shit man, you can fuck up your WHOLE car if its not balanced properly.. You really want to take that chance?

.dont even bother.  it doesnt do a whole lot but make the car harder to get rolling from a stop.  i have a 9 lb and i dont see what the big deal is.  and lightened stock fly's have a nasty habit of blowing up or being imperfectly balanced and ruining the bottom end of the motor.

.well... mike has spoken.. lol.

i too have heard of lightened stock flywheels ending up causing lots of trouble.  even if your guy is gonna do it cheap.. it may not be a good idea.

.dont DIY on an OEM flywheel.  there are reasons why companys like ACT and Fidanza are out there.  spend the $200 to get a lighter flywheel rather then $1500 down the road for a new trans and engine after it explodes or ruins the bottom end of ur engine.
