Starter Problem

I have a 95 si 1.6 vtec (D16Z6)  The other day it started acting up, first off when my foot is off the clutch it makes a rattling noise but when I put my foot back on the clutch it stops (noise coming from tranny area).  Then I was driving and it started to shake really bad and found out it was my starter, it was not retracting after starting, so it was riding on my flywheel and just burnt it up.  I put the new starter in and if worked fine.  After starting it a few times I let it sit for about an hour, when I went to go start it again it didnt crank at all.  I pulled the starter out and tested it and it was fine, I reinstalled it and its been working fine for the last 2 days but it still shakes, not as bad but still something to worry about, I was wondering if this could be a fly wheel problem or if there is somthing else I should be looking at.  Also could this maybe be the starter relay switch not working and maybe the starter is not retracting again and that could be why my old starter went to hell on me and is makeing the flywheel unbalanced cause it to shake.  Let me know if anyone has had this problem or know of anything I could try.  Thank you.

.The noise when the clutch is engaged and goes away when the clutch is disengaged is most likely your pilot bearing goin bad.

As for the really bad shaking I don't thing a starte could do that but I don't know what quot;really badquot; shaking means exactly. Usually the most common causes of a bad shake are from unbalanced tires and or a bad alignment. It could be that your flywhell got damaged by the started and it is out of balance and if that is so get it fixed immediatly because it could destroy your engine.

As for the starter not retracting, that you could be because it is still engaged and running even when you release the key from the start position or the clearances between the engagement gear and the flywheel are way to tight when the engine is turning and it can't release. Either case will destroy a stater if you drive with it engaged. I'd check to see your entire starter circuit is in perfect working order. I'd say either your problem is with the starter circuit having a fault or engagement gear clearances being way to tight. A direct problem with the starter motor would be my last guess because the mitsuba and denso starters are very reliable starter motors.

.Ok, thanks.  I am going to check my flywheel tomarrow after work when I pull my tranny out.
