This is my project. It will basically be a full restoration, as the car is a POS right now.
The driver side floor is on its way out, the passenger side I'm pretty sure I could kick it out. Everytime I shut a door, more rust falls out.
BUT, it starts up everytime. It currently has no brakes on it so I haven't driven it yet, nor will I for probably many months but the initial project for this bad boy is to take the entire body off and buy an aluminum replacement.
But, as said... she's just COVERED in rust. Just COVERED. You won't see it from this picture but this truck is going to be a LOT of work. I'm going to have so much fun. This entire project is going to be one massive learning experience for me. I also paid 200$ for it, so you can imagine what little there is that's right with it (for example, only the right turn signal turns on, and only the front light)Here she is!! It's a 1989 Jeep YJ with the 4.2L inline 6. No clue about the transmission. It fires up every time and I'd imagine after sitting for 5 years there's a bunch of oil caked inside the engine (which has 250 000km, or about 150 000 miles). It revs up fine and all so I'm pretty excited.
.my next door neighbor bought a 86 blazer with a diesel for $300. RUST BUCKET ! i hear him everyday banging on that thing. i've help a few times too. it's a good learning experience, plus i don't have to worry about my father yelling at me to get a POS out of his driveway.
.Thats no car. Thats a JEEP!! Nice project. Good luck with it.

thanks for the GL, I'm really really REALLY excited to get to it. I'm anticipating the front end is going to need lots of work, tie rods, bearings etc. going to have to do the brakes, change all the fluids. It has a full tank of gas... that was filled 5 years ago. Going to do a tune up as well, oil change when I can. Sandblast the frame as well and of course, new tub.
hell, I've got a HUGE to do list with this Jeep. Time to join a Jeep forum!
.i bet it cost more to rent that fuckin u-haul trailer then the jeep itself.
.Looks like a fun project. best of luck to you. You should get a fiberglass body for it. no worries about rust.

I should've had a better paying job this summer but I picked fun over money! So now I don't have enough to be able to toss out the 3-4g I need for the aluminum body.
also the trailer rental was 55$, the Jeep was 200$, gas for the day was about 60$. Ownership transfer, used vehicle report, sales tax added up to 46$.
.nice project...blkjak
.Keep us posted on the project.
.What's a good Jeep forum for me to join, anyone know?
.i was on quot;jeepsunlimitedquot; for years but its full of noobs. i was also on the cherokee forum, idk about the yj forum. like i said it did me a lot of good for years but now i cant even go on there because its just full of wanna be wheelers.
if i was to do it again id do pirate 4x4. they are some real dicks but they really know their shit. so if you can put up with some harassment about being a nooby lol then they will give some good info.
its got a 4.2 huh? thats pretty sweet. is it carbed? if its injected i didnt know they came injected. that jeep is the only year that has the correct crank that doesnt require any modification. you can take that crank and rods and put them into a HO 4.0 with the 4.0 pistons and have a 4.6 stroker motor. if you get an earlier crank you have to cut off a centimeter off the snout or modify a balancer.
as for all the front end work, dont do anything until you figure out what direction you want to go with it. how serious of a wheeler is this going to be? how are you going to lift it? if your going to spend all that cash on an aluminum body you must be serious about the suspension too right? if you are getting real serious i wouldnt drop a dime on those axles. its prolly got the dana35 or the amc 20 in the rear right? if your going to swap the body you might as well do some axles.
depending on how serious you are, you just bought a $200 frame and other misc. parts lol, sounds like a deal to me!! get some pics of the underside. lets see how bad these floors really are. the body loooks good, i would prolly replace the floors. i did it in my cherokee and if you have the cash they make replacment floor pans quot;cheapest on e-bayquot;
keep us posted

from : localhost/www.jeepforum.com/forum/ Tons of knowlegable people.
.ive never been there but i hear good things.
.Will check that forum,
the first step clint is to get it road worthy. I'm tempted to take it to a mech and say quot;what does it need to pass safetyquot; and that'd give me a list to start with. I think a tub is without a doubt though.
Once it's driveable, then i'll start working on suspension and axles. I think those will be the last thing I do.
.so its just going to be a driver? dont go to a mechanic and do that. they hate that. he could spend an hour going over your truck and give you a quote and you pretty much waste his time. this is definatly something you can do your self.
like i said, idk how serious you are about this thing. example, you could go to the parts store and buy everything you need for new brakes, OR if you are real serious you can get parts off a newer jeep and have some badass dual piston calipers in the front and disc brakes in the rear.
same withthe suspension. you can fix it all now but later on when you do a lift you might end up buying alot of those parts new anyway. example, if you do a spring over axle swap in the front you are prolly going to get a high steer kit and should just buy all new quot;performancequot; steering when you get there.
if it was me and i REALLY didnt want to keep the body i would strip that thing down to a rolling chassis and have it sand blasted and paint it. then i would do a shackle reversal in the front and a SOA swap front and rear with new leafs. id use teraflex shackles in the rear and a high steer kit in the front.
then i would do atleast a HO swap. if i had the cash id dot a 4.7 HO swap. then your ready for a tub. with that i would do a 2-3quot; body lift and then you can easily run 37quot; tires. if you go that big the dana30 wont handle it so i would look for some dana44s.
but thats if your real serious about it. if you just want a DD with some nice mud tires, then buy all your brake and steering parts, do a body lift and put some 33s under it and call it a day. |
