so i get home from work'n with my dad today and see a little puddle under my truck................ tranny pan is soaked. bolts are dry seems its probably comming from some spots where rust may be comming through...bah!. so im think'n ill need a new pan and will pick up a filter while im at it.......one thing tho..... i read in the haynes manual about adjusting the bands and how it should be done. i don't have any shifting issues so do i really need to do this? i don't have an inch pounds torque wrench but i don't want to take it in somewhere to get a new pan put on cause they will rape me probably in $$$. it doesn't look hard but if i leave it alone it should be fine right?
.if its not slipping or anything you should be fine. and yeah sounds like ur pan is rotting, not uncommon for a northern truck. just pick up a filter kit and how ever many quarts of ATF+4 needed.

X2, putting a pan on is easy.
.yeah tranny pan is cake, now an oil pan is a whole nother monster to deal with.
.You have no adjustments in your trans. 45RFE doesn't have bands.
Obviously, pick up the filters for it. It takes two filters, normal sump filter and a spin on filter for the cooler return. I bought a WIX kit from www.rockauto.com Came with both filters and a cork gasket if you're so inclined to use it. I used silicone on the pan.
.USE SILICONE! I had my Neon's transmission serviced last fall(new filter and Royal Purple Max ATF) and this summer it is probably leaking. I say probably because it is red color and feels like ATF but I keep checking the level cold and it shows full.

and do u guys actually torque the screws or just do em up tight. i don't have an inch pound wrench so...??
.thanks for all the help. its all done. did it a few days ago. went smooth like u guys said. it took alot of fluid tho back in. it drained at least 6 ltrs out. i had a 5 ltr of new atf +4 and when i used that to put the old stuff into for storage and take away i still had another liter or so in the pan left to dispose of. there wasn't even anything on the dip stick after i shifted through gears lol. the dealer said 5 would be enough but guess he was wrong ... no suprise thanks again. |
