I'm sure some of you guys have upgraded to slooted and drilled rotors, how long does it take to rub off the plating where the pads run? Is it worth the effort? do they actually help? I'm looking at a set w/pads for 155 bucks. Is that a god price for um? thanks
.I drive an 00 Dakota 4.7L. At 20K I had the rotors turned due to warping. I then replaced those same rotors (warped again) at around 40K with dimpled and slotted rotors and new pads. No more warping. The new pads lasted 60K and the rotors are in great shape at 100K. I measured them with dial calipers and they hadn't lost even .005quot;.
.155 sound good as long as you are getting some good pads.
Cheap pads will make lots of noise when braking.
.what about the plating? is it still there where the pad runs or is it gone?
.My rotors are zinc-plated cast iron and had a dull, flat sheen when new, but eventually attained a polished, somewhat shiny appearance after a few hundred miles. Here is the quote directly from the brakeperformance.com website: quot; Our premium quality Zinc Plating remains on all areas including inside slots and holes that do not come into contact with the brake pads. Available in Silver or Black..quot; Mine look great after 60K.
.Thats what I was wondering, I figured after a short time the plating would rub off where the pads run. But thats only natural. As long as it stays on everything else I'm happy. I hate rusty parts. the wheels on my truck have steel inserts where the lugs go in and they keep rusting my damn lug nuts. I guess I need to get some of that rust converter to stop that. I've replaced the lugs like 2 times and that shit gets expensive, I don't think they make stainless lug nuts. Do they?
.I would go dimpled rather than cross-drilled. These trucks are heavy and the calipers will likely crack near the holes...
.Fretking, just wondering which pads you used with those rotors? I plan on getting those same rotors with their ceramic pads. I see they also offer two different semi-metallic pads. Also do you get alot of brake dust with your rotor and pad combo? Thanks
.I don't remember the brand, but they are semi-metallic. I get very little dust. I'd go with the ceramic pads as a replacement, as I've heard good things about them. One last thing: I just put the pads on recently as the older set had 60K on them. They weren't making noise or anything but I had the sense that the stopping power had diminished somewhat. As it had been awhile since I actually bothered to LOOK at my front brakes closely, I pulled a wheel and discovered to my horror no more than a sixteenth of an inch left on the pads on both sides! The pads were all cracked like a broken windshield but basically intact. I'm guessing the heat took a serious toll on them in the last 1000 miles or so, but the rotors are still perfect. The new pads have restored the braking power.
.Ok. Thanks for the feed back. I'm glad you like the rotors. I'm going to order the dimpled and slotted rotors with the ceramic pads front and rear. I would of been alittle nervous ordering them without some feedback. It should help it stop alittle better. I think I'll change the brake fluid too while I'm at it. Thanks |
